What a vulnerable sector check is — and who needs one

A vulnerable sector check is a criminal record check plus an extra search for record-suspended (pardoned) sexual offences. Under BC’s Criminal Records Review Act, it’s required for people in positions of trust over children or vulnerable adults — whether you’re paid or volunteering.

That includes nurses and care aides, teachers and education assistants, early childhood educators, coaches, foster parents, social and support workers, and volunteers in schools, sports, faith groups and hospices. If your employer, college, or organization asked for a “vulnerable sector” or “enhanced” check, this is the one.
